Crucial Questions Before You Purchase

As a purveyor of the Minimalistic Gent lifestyle, you need a foundational understanding of the criterion you must adhere to before making your next purchase.

The minimalistic lifestyle beckons for a wiser methodology to purchases; ensuring clutter-free areas.  The following questions offer brief ideas to ponder before the purchase of a  new item:

1. Will this purchase cannibalize the usage of another item?

The immediate question you must ask yourself is if there is already an item that serves the same purpose as the item you are positioned to buy.  An example would be the purchase of a new belt.  As an item where you can only don a singular iteration, does this item evoke a different enough look where you will be able to utilize each belt for different occasions?  Often times we purchase for various derisory reasons that are not related to functionality, and if the item is too similar in purpose or aesthetics, you do not need the item because of the presence of your item that already performs that task.

2. Does purchasing this item cause a dissonance in who I am?

With the presence of many outside sources, especially from social media, we often find ourselves interested in outlandish items that generally do not resonate with our persona. It is important to be idiosyncratic, and if an extravagant item reverberates with your individuality greatly and it consummates who you are, than you should make that purchase.  With so much noise challenging our stylistic prowess, it can be easy to jump on trending items that look phenomenal on others.  These items though project insubstantial cues that are not everlasting in your own modus operandi. A gentleman is exceptional in his self-confidence and only dons items that amplify his personal style.

3. Does this product have exceptional quality that will last an extended amount of time?

In order to minimize your possessions, quality needs to be taken into account.  Often, required purchases stem from the replacement of low-quality items that do not last.  It is extremely easy to make smaller commitments to items because of their low costs, but weigh the consequences of these actions; including time lost in shopping and capital wasted on replacement of inferior items.  These are two essentials of life that should not be squandered, and it can be avoided through the purchase of high-quality items with long shelf-lives.

4. Will the purchase of this item cause me stress?

When making the final decision to purchase, it is important to think of the corollary of feelings associated with the purchase.  What is the upkeep requirements of this item?  Is the item’s cost so excessive that it will cause anxiety?  Salient in our analysis of this item, it is the cost of doing business with this item.  Maintenance is pivotal in the acquirement of high-quality items that last an extended period of time, but are you willing to make that time commitment?  No item is worth overtaxing your emotions, and the procurement process of attaining an item should be exciting and enjoyable.

5. Will this item have future value?

Thinking of a long-term strategy will enable yourself to rationalize why you need this item.  An example would be for a beautifully crafted luxury watch.  Will this watch appreciate over time in value?  Will this watch be passed down to my next of kin? These are great attributes of an item that will vindicate the reason for their acquirement.  The legacy of these items should be taken into account as it discourages wasteful spending, and could potentially have future residuals that can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Although many minimalists will advocate for the entire renunciation of purchases, we at the Minimalistic Gent encourage the purchase of items if they are able to positively reinforce all of these questions.  Understanding the rationality of your purchasing decisions is paramount in reducing the sheer amount of possessions in your household, and these questions will aid in the acquisitions of only the quintessential items that will further yourself as a modern gentleman.
